Our Top Ten QLD Swimming Holes

These are our current Top Ten swimming holes, they are not in any particular order as they are all amazing.

With each swimming hole, we have listed links to places to Camp. There are at least another 10 we could easily add to this list. Each of the orange buttons will take you through to the location on Campedia.


Rainbow Falls Rock Pools – Blackdown Tablelands

These took our breath away, not only by how cold the water is but it was stunning and very accessible.

Blackdown tablelands is 2 1/2 drive from Rockhampton with two camping location close by.

There are two Great Caravan Parks and Campgrounds nearby.

Emmagen Creek – Cape Tribulation

Emmagen Creek is just north of Cape Tribulation, at the start of the Bloomfield Track. When you arrive at the creek crossing, the second car park up the hill on your right is a walking track to a rope swing and tree across the creek. Great place to cool off and for photos.

Beachfront Powered and Unpowered Camp Sites “Where the Rainforest meets the Reef” Cape Tribulation, QLD Situated 2.5 hours north of Cairns on the sealed coastal road, explore and discover one of the world’s oldest surviving rainforests with a huge range of activities and adventures on offer.


Upper Stoney Creek – Byfield National Park

Features: open-plan campsites set among pine trees and natural bushland adjacent to Stony Creek. Swimming and walking opportunities. Location: 11km along the rough gravel road turn-off signed on Byfield Road. Access: the camping areas can be reached by conventional vehicle. It is accessible for camper trailers and caravans. The number of sites: 14 numbered sites currently available.


Mossman Gorge – Douglas Shire Tropical North Queensland

Getting to the Mossman Gorge you must jump on the shuttle bus from the information centre, it is approx. a 5min run to the start of the boardwalk trails. If you are coming past Mossman this is a must-do with a 2.4KM walking trail and multiple swimming holes. Embark on your own adventure through the Gorge with a voyage through the lush green rainforest.

Welcome to the Mossman Pool and Caravan Park. Located on the banks of the crystal clear Mossman River, the Mossman Pool and Caravan Park is a tranquil oasis on the doorstep of the Mossman Gorge and surrounded by the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest. The park is within easy walking distance from the sugarcane farming town of Mossman and a short 20-minute drive from Port Douglas.


Big Crystal Creek Rock SlidesCrystal Creek

Approximately 75KM north of Townsville is Big Crystal Creek Rockslides, which offers multiple crystal clear swimming holes. At the first turn off the bitumen walking track, there is a natural rockslide that will provide hours of fun for the kiddos. Take your googles and get up close and personal to see a large number of jungle perch that reside in these pools, they are so friendly they swim around with you. Please be careful as the rocks are extremely slippery. Be responsible and don’t take glass into these areas for others safety and your own. Penalties apply as glass containers are prohibited. Don’t forget to take your rubbish out with you. Let’s keep these beautiful places clean so that everyone can keep enjoying them. No fires, no camping and no pets allowed in this area.

Camping area features: located beside Big Crystal Creek, this camping area is a popular swimming and picnic spot and a good place for birdwatching. Location: 4km to the park entrance along the unsealed Spiegelhauer Road. Access: the camping area can be reached by conventional vehicles. It is accessible to trailers and small caravans. Large caravans and buses are not recommended because it is a relatively small area with a narrow access road through the camping area. Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites. Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping, small caravans, camper trailers and small motorhomes.


Rollingstone Creek – Swimming Hole

Amazing swimming holes. It is located approx. 200meters from the Brice Highway. Taking caravans and camper trailers is not advisable due to the lack of turning room. There is a small parking area close to the access track. A short 100meter stroll to a choice of rock pools. Please be careful as crocodiles have been known to enter this area.

Balgal Beach is a hidden treasure north of Townsville’s CBD. The camp grounds are located in the car park area as you enter on the right. You will see the boat ramp and the Fisherman’s Landing Kiosk on the left. Grab some fish and chips and enjoy them on the deck of the kiosk, at picnic tables or on the foreshore itself. There is a playground for the kids to burn energy while you relax and keep a close eye on them from the picnic tables. *Dogs are permitted but must remain on a leash at all times. *Campsites must be vacated by 10am on the day of departure.


Wheel of Fire – Water Falls and Swimming hole

Wheel of Fire Walk is a 4.8 kilometre out and back trail located near Finch Hatton, Queensland, Australia that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking.

Finch Hatton Showgrounds (Pioneer Valley Showgrounds)

Powered and Non Powered campsites are available. Sites are suitable for tents, Camper trailers, motorhomes, caravans and big rigs. Please report to the caretaker on arrival.
